Bytes of History - by Sandy Schmidt

The web page, http://bytesofhistory.org, provides access to documents describing the social history of Washington focusing primarily on the 19^th and early 20^th centuries. Special emphasis is given to the men and women of the Metropolitan Police Department and the many interesting stories of those interred in Washington cemeteries.

Preservationists are applauding a District of Columbia decision to save a 104 year old carriage house near Lincoln Park which had been neglected by owners for many years.

Update on Reservation 13: City seeks proposals for downsized development project

The Deputy Mayor’s Office for Economic Development (DMPED) has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest for development of Parcels F-1 and G-1 on Reservation 13. Responses are due January 7, 2013. See attached DMPED information. See also CHRS News for December 2012/January 2013 for additional information.

Update on 11th Street Bridge Project
October 18, 2012 -- Latest developments
•    New ramp from 11th Street SE to Southbound I-295 Now Open.
•    New entrance onto the westbound Southeast Freeway from 11th Street, SE is expected to open in late fall 2012.
•    Illegal shortcut from 17th Street & Barney Circle to the Southeast Freeway will be closed in stages, beginning September 17, 2012. This closure is for building the new Southeast/Southwest Boulevard.

Coalition of Preservation Groups Calls for Thoughtful Stewardship of Historic Union Station
CHRS -- along with the DC Preservation League, the Committee of 100 on the Federal City, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation -- has released a report highlighting the importance of historic preservation, comprehensive planning, and public involvement in response to expansion plans by Amtrak and other entities at Union Station.
